Dance healing the mind
Dance is movement, but it is feeling that connects body and mind. When we dance, our brain releases loose endorphins and serotonin that battle stress and boost mood. This natural brain chemistry boost can be especially therapeutic for individuals who are managing anxiety, depression, or emotional exhaustion. The actual bodily movement to music also provides individuals with a means of processing that cannot be expressed in words. Through either learned choreography or improvisational movement, dance provides a safe environment in which to dig up and release feelings that otherwise lie buried.
In addition to physical benefits, dance teaches one presence and awareness. Concentration on rhythm, coordination, and breath isolates focus away from concern and into the present moment. It induces a flow state of mind where the negative mind disappears and acuity asserts itself. Group dance environments, like class or performance venues, also induce senses of belongingness and connection, and they eliminate loneliness. Thus, dance is a mental therapy: an elating, unencumbering exercise that induces emotional strength and inner peace.
